*In 1939 the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) refused to allow Ms. Anderson to sing to an integrated audience which caused First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, as well as several other members, to resign. The President asked Ms Anderson to sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. This was an open concert to all and gathered more than 75,000 people of all colors. In 1943, she finally sang at DAR Constitution Hall as apart of a benefit for the American Red Cross.
