This day in Black History

On this day, March 1, 1927, Singer/Actor/Activist Harry Belafonte was born in Harlem, New York.
Many of us know Mr. Harry Belafonte from his many film roles and breakthrough album Calypso (1956), which featured the Banana Boat Song but he was a very important part of the civil rights movement. He was one of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s closest confidants. Because of his role in the movement, he was blacklisted during the McCarthy era. He financed the Freedom Rides, supported voter registration drives & helped to organize the March on Washington in 1963.*
